382 Steps to Corniglia

May 4, 2011 by Anna Merulla / Tags: , , , , , , , / 2 Comments

Corniglia is the only village in the Cinque Terre that is not by the sea. This little charming village is located on a hundred of meters high steep promontory and it is the smallest of the five villages, about 245 habitants!

To reach Corniglia, it is necessary to climb the “Lardarina”, a long brick flight of steps composed of 33 flights with 382 steps! They are not very difficult steps, just ensure you have the right shoes on (you should leave the high-heels at home) and take it easy.

I suggest to make the stairs to reach this village because it is really worth it, otherwise follow a vehicular road that, from the station, leads to the village. Sometimes a small bus runs up and down here.

While reaching the village by stairs, stop some minutes and admire the uncontaminated and charming hillside with many vineyards that surrounds the town, the breathtaking panoramic view of the whole coastal line of the Cinque Terre, the transparent and crystalline Mediterranean sea, smell the flowers and enjoy the tranquillity of this place.

Finally, at the top you are greeted with a sign welcoming you to Corniglia and congratulating you on having climbed 382 steps to reach the village.

Corniglia is a lovely place. We were there this past September. There is an especially beautiful spot all the way out at the end of town, with a spectacular view. A great place to watch the sun set.

I haven’t been to Cinque Terre in years so I don’t have much advice but to say that I loved it. We had the Cinque Terre pass which we took from La Spezia and I rebmemer it being very easy. There were a lot of tourists but it was so beautiful (and it was fun for me to see cactus because I’m from the southwest and wasn’t expecting them in Italy). I do recommend taking a swimsuit becase in June it’ll be HOT and it’d be nice to cool off and take a break at the beach though I was in my early teens and it was my first experience with topless bathers.

Fish Festival in Camogli

Fish Festival

In a small square of the charming village of Camogli you will discover the world's largest frying pan. The pan comes out annually on the second Sunday of May and is used to fry up loads of free fish handed out to villagers and tourists for the annual Fish Festival (Sagra del Pesce) dedicated to St Fortunato, patron saint of fishermen.A must!
