Discovering Liguria from Genova

Still a source of inspiration that annually attracts droves of travelers from elsewhere in Italy and afar, boomerang-shaped Liguria is best explored end-to-end on day trips from its most central and magnificent city – La Superba.
Genova is well-connected to all of the region’s major towns by train or bus, making it easy to discover the charms of its four provinces (Imperia, Savona, Genova, and La Spezia).
Before a recent trip using the lovely “Il Borgo di Genova” as my home base, I mapped out visits from Statione Brignole to popular destinations like Portofino and the Cinque Terre, but also to lesser known gems like Camogli, Sarzana, Campo Ligure, Cervo, Laigueglia, Noli, and more. The furthest towns were 2 to 3 hours away by train (tops), but most were a delightfully short 30 to 60 minute ride (or less). Efficient, easy, and an intriguing city in its own right, a stay in Genova makes it possible to get the most out of Liguria.
