If you want to capture Genoa’s soul you have to listen to Fabrizio De Andre’s libertarian music. Fabrizio de Andrè was an italian singer-songwriter born in Genoa in 1940 and died of cancer in 1999. He is considered a poet and many of his works tell about stories of rebels, prostitutes, marginalized people, outcasts. His songs are considered by critics as genuine poetry.
If you had the occasion to listen to his song “Via del Campo” (literally “Field Street” or “Girls from the Narrow Lane”) you can not miss to visit this part of Genoa, told by the songwriter De Andrè.
Via del Campo lies in the heart of the Carrugi. Once was a particularly degraded area, today it is a major attraction with boutiques, cafes and little shops. Fabrizio de Andrè wrote this song inspired by the irreducible people met in this street “Via del Campo”.
Once there, visit the “Gianni Tassio” music shop, an enthusiast friend of De Andrè. the shop is also home to a personal guitar of De Andrè and some of his rarest recordings.
“Via del Campo” by Fabrizio de Andrè
“Via del Campo” translated in english is:
In the street Del Campo there is a graceful (girl I presume) (with) big eyes of the color of a leaf all night long she is standing on the threshold sells to everybody the same rose
(in) the street Del Campo there is a little girl with lips of color intense red (she has)the eyes grey like the road flowers grow wherever she walks
(in) the street Del Campo there is a ***** (with) big eyes of the color of a leaf if you have the want to love her it will be enough to take her by the hand
and it will seem to you that you are going very far she is looking at you with a smile you couldn’t believe that paradise was only there on the first floor
(in) the street Del Campo goes a deluded person to beg her to marry seeing her to go up the stairs until the balcony is closed
love and laugh if (she) responds with love cry loud if (she )doesn’t hear you from the diamonds nothing is starts from
from the manure start the flowers from the diamonds nothing is starts from from the manure start the flowers

Hi Anna, thank you so much for sharing Fabrizio De Andre’s beautiful music. I can’t wait for my husband to hear this I know he will love it as well.
ciao Lisa
How great for you to share this! During my February (2012) visit to Genoa I had lunch at Trattoria del Galeone (Via San Bernardo) and they were filming a movie about Fabrizio! I learned all about him from the actors and before I left I was able to buy several CD’s of his music.
I can’t wait to return in a few weeks to have lunch at Gaelone and find out about the prduction of the movie.
Grazie!
